Tun Md Raus bin Sharif was appointed as the Chairman of Legacy Trustee Berhad, bringing a distinguished legal career and decades of leadership experience to the forefront of the company’s operations. His tenure as the 14th Chief Justice of Malaysia and his extensive contributions to judicial reforms, particularly in commercial law, equip him with valuable insights to steer Legacy Trustee Berhad in the fields of private and corporate trust services, custodianship, and family office setups. His leadership marks a significant step forward in the company’s mission to deliver high-quality Trustee services.
Tun Raus was born in a small village of Kampung Bukit, Astana Raja, Rembau, Negeri Sembilan on 4 February 1951. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Malaya in 1976 and thereafter he obtained his Master of Laws from the London School of Economic in 1987.
Tun Raus began his legal career in 1976 as an officer in the Judicial and Legal Service where he held various posts, including Magistrate, President of the Sessions Court, Deputy Public Prosecutor, legal Advisor to the Ministry of International Trade, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs. He had also served as the State Legal Advisor for Malacca and Kelantan. He last posting with the Judicial and legal Service was as the Treasury Solicitor with the Ministry of Finance.
In November 1, 1994 Tun Raus was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner and elevated as a High Court Judge on January 12, 1996. During his tenure as a High Court Judge, he had served in Shah Alam, Muar and Penang as well as in Kuala Lumpur Criminal Division, Civil Division (Family Court), Commercial Division and the Appellate and Special Powers Division.
Tun Raus was elevated to the Court of Appeal on 28 July 2006. Thereafter on 14 October 2009, to the Federal Court. On 12 September 2011, he was appointed as the President of the Court of Appeal.
Tun Raus reached the pinnacle of his judicial career when he assumed the office as the 14th Chief Justice on 1 April 2017.
Prior to his appointment as the Chief Justice, Tun Raus was instrumental in the judicial reform initiated under the stewardship of Tun Zaki. Tun Raus undertook the burden as a Managing Judge to speared managerial tasks, to oversee reforms in particular the Commercial Division of the High Court Kuala Lumpur.
At the same time he was also the Managing Judge of Appellate and Special Powers Division, Civil Division of Sessions and Magistrate’s Court of Kuala Lumpur and later as the Managing Judge for the States of Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Northern Johore (Muar).
As a Managing Judge, Tun Raus pioneered the setting up of the New Commercial Court (NCC). Through the NCC he devised a long-lasting and practical solution to tackling and disposing of the massive backlog of old commercial cases while simultaneously disposing new and current cases expeditiously. It is through the establishment of the NCC that commercial cases are now disposed within the timeline of 9 months. The success achieved in the setting up of the NCC paved the way for the setting up of the other specialised commercial courts.
On the international front, Tun Raus was given the honour to serve as the President of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent. Then Tun Raus was also an active participating member of the Council of ASEAN Chief Justice (CACJ).

Darjah Kebesaran Seri Panglima Darjah Kinabalu (SPDK),
Darjah Kebesaran Peringkat Pertama Sri Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang (SSAP),
Darjah Kebesaran Datuk Amar Bintang Kenyalang (DA) in 2016,
Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri Pulau Pinang (DUPN) in 2017 and,
Darjah Kebesaran Seri Setia Mahkota (SSM) in 2017.
